LETTER TO BOB [ROBERT SHERRILL]:

1973. Typed Letter Signed "Gay." One page 7.25 x 10.5 inches, on his personal letterhead, Oct 9th, 1973, to Bob [Robert Sherrill] friend and editor of the New Journalism at Esquire. Old folds. Very good. Item #54379

Gay Talese writes to Bob Sherrill (1925 - 2007) his editor at Esquire, as well as Tom Wolfe's, Gore Vidal's and other writers of the "New Jornalism." Talese offers suggestions to Sherrill for financial backing for a proposed literary publication; "try to interest Jan Wenner at Rolling Stone in San Fran. This might be a way of staying in touch with its aging readership -- that is, the youthful Stone readership will inevitably get too old for the radical political rock world, and soon will be in middle-aged swinging syndromes..." He further writes, "There is a guy, the black tycoon named Barry Gordy of Motown Records, who is a real stud horse...Gordy has been to Sandstone, and really is a sexual kinker."

Sandstone Retreat, officially the Sandstone Foundation for Community Systems Research, was a clothing-optional, open sexuality resort for swingers located in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Malibu.
