"Eugène Atget was born near Bordeaux in 1857. He was raised by an uncle, and went to sea as a young man. He spent seventeen years on the stage as an actor, but after an unsuccessful career of minor roles, and a brief attempt at painting, he turned to photography at the age of 40. In the 1880's Atget moved to Paris from the provinces... He died in Paris in 1927. Aside from this skeletal biography, little more is known of the man whose photographic works astound us with their power and original achievement. As the years pass, Atget the man remains stubbornly mysterious, while the image and influence of his work grow stronger." (p. 5, from the introduction by Anstiss Drake). Includes bibliographical references.
