Wilson, the leading portrait photographer of Aberdeen in the 1850s, was an early innovator experimenting with the new medium of photography. He was commissioned to photograph the construction of Balmoral Castle and frequently photographed the Royal Family there; he prolifically produced landscape views, portraits, cartes-de-visite, stereograms, postcards, albums, etc. The appendices include: detailed notes and listings of his images; a reprinting of his work A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE COLLODION PROCESS IN PHOTOGRAPHY, 1855.
