Hurter (1844-1898), a chemist by training and profession, and Driffield (1848-1915), an engineer, came to be work associates and then intimate friends. Driffield induced Hurter to take up photography as a recreation and together they began their investigations. The first account of their work "Photochemical Investigations and a New Method of Determination of the Sensitiveness of Photographic Plates" was published in 1890.
